A Romantic Gurudwara Wedding at Los Angeles

The proposal

“We met during Anesthesiology residency. Parvin was my medical student for a month while I was in my first year of anaesthesia training. We spent most of the month together and then we did not meet again for more than a year. We had lost touch until New Jersey had a huge snowstorm and I was stuck at the airport. At that time I was not able to get a taxi or train and Parvin had come to rescue me. We finally caught up on the last year of each other’s lives. He grew up in New Jersey, while I grew up in California. His parents had recently moved back to California and they found a house an exit away from my parents' house! The rest was history.”

The Destination

“Parvin and I were training in different hospitals and thankfully were able to get a week’s vacation off together. We decided we wanted to go to Greece, Athens and Santorini. I wanted to do a photoshoot in Santorini while we were there and booked Dimitris Psillakis. Parvin got together with Dimitris and planned a perfect surprise proposal. Parvin is always the last one to get ready out of the two of us, so he pretended to have trouble with his hair that day. We took a few photos with Dimitris and then Parvin went down to fix his hair while I had a little solo session. I was standing on the rooftop facing the beautiful blue domes when Parvin came up behind me and asked me to turn around. He was down on one knee and clearly very nervous/excited. He said a lovely speech for me, which I do not remember at all, before he asked me to marry him. I was overjoyed! We continued our photoshoot after and then went on an ATV ride around the island. Our night ended with a beautiful Santorini sunset. It was so magical!

The functions

We got married in Los Angeles at a gurdwara I had been to a few times. I always wanted to get married there. Our families started arriving a weekend before our wedding functions. We were so overjoyed with all the love they brought with them. During the week, we had our mehendi event, haldi, and chura ceremonies. My best friend had planned a dance for the bridal party and we practiced at every chance we got. My aunt had a lovely dance she prepared for my family for the Sangeet. This was the first time my mom and dad had ever done a performance. They definitely stole the show on the Sangeet night. While all this was going on, it still was hard to believe that it was our wedding in a couple days. On the day of my vatna(haldi ceremony), I had walked out and sat down. When my parents started all the rituals and put the haldi over me, it finally hit me. I started crying, seeing the happiness in my dad's eyes, my mom's smile, and my family…

The Wedding Style

“Our wedding style was of a whimsical garden theme. We had real flowers all along the aisle and surrounding Baba Ji. The Sangeet had a Boho Moroccan theme, with rugs, pouffes, and pillows all along the dance floors. There were string lights everywhere and real dried flowers for decor.”
